Lessons

Individual Nihon buyo (Japanese classical dance) and shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instrument) lessons are offered on Saturday mornings. Community-outreach group lessons are offered on Monday mornings. We ask for a $20 monthly contribution for individual lessons (this rate is discounted when you take both dance and shamisen.) We meet at Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha – Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu in Honolulu, Hawaii (on the island of Oahu). Please contact us if you are interested in taking lessons!

1239 Olomea Street, Honolulu, HI 96817

Equipment:

You will (eventually) need:
tabi (split-toe socks)
yukata (cotton kimono)
– at least 2 himo (narrow fabric belts/ties) to hold it closed
obi (decorative sash – we recommend a half-width hanhaba obi)
–  mai-sensu (paper dance fan)

* hosozao shamisen – used for nagauata style music

All of these items may be borrowed from the school when you begin taking lessons but you will want to buy your own if you continue studying!
